Riding a Scooter in Ubud, Bali

By WiPassion · Scooter travel guide for Ubud

Ubud is the cultural soul of Bali. Nestled in the forested hills of central Bali, it is famous for its terraced rice paddies, ancient Hindu temples, world-class wellness retreats, and the richest concentration of traditional Balinese arts anywhere on the island. It is strikingly different from the beach towns of the south — cooler, greener, and far more serene.

Exploring Ubud by scooter is one of the great Bali experiences. The roads around the town centre are narrow and atmospheric, winding between rice fields and compound walls draped in frangipani. Further out, the countryside opens up into sweeping valley views, jungle rivers, and quiet villages that have changed little in generations.

A scooter lets you discover the Ubud that most tourists on guided tours never see — the back roads, the hidden temples, the warungs where locals eat, and the views that don't appear on any Instagram grid.

Why Explore Ubud by Scooter?

The area around Ubud is vast and spread out. Tegalalang is 15 minutes north, Tirta Empul is 15 minutes east, and Campuhan Ridge is on the western edge of town. Taxis and guided tours visit the main sights on fixed itineraries. A scooter means you set the schedule — arrive at Tegalalang before the tour buses at 7am, or linger at a roadside warung watching the rice farmers work.

The roads around Ubud are also some of the most beautiful in Bali. Jl Raya Tegalalang, the Campuhan ridge road, and the back lanes through Penestanan and Sayan offer scenery that is genuinely breathtaking on a clear morning.

Riding Tips for Ubud

Go early. The Tegalalang Rice Terraces and Monkey Forest are already busy by 9am. Arrive at 7am on a scooter and you'll have the place almost to yourself.

Watch for steep, narrow lanes. Ubud's side roads drop suddenly into river gorges and can be tight. Keep your speed low in unfamiliar areas and watch for oncoming traffic on blind corners.

It is cooler up here. At 300–500m above sea level, Ubud can feel noticeably cooler than the beach, especially at night. The raincoat included with every WiPassion rental doubles as a windbreaker for evening rides.
